Setup for Sky HD and Surround Sound using Yamaha RX-V1065 Receiver

Since the previous article, the system has been updated, and the Sony STR-DH800 receiver has been replaced with a Yamaha RX-V1065 receiver.  The basic features in this system are still the same and include the following:

  • HD TV
  • Sky + HD Satellite Receiver
  • Blu-ray Disc Player
  • Multi Channel AV Receiver
  • Home Theatre System 5.1 Speaker Package
  • iPod
  • Various cables and connectors
  • Universal Remote Control

Supporting 5.1 surround sound from the sky hd box is a key requirement as well as reproducing the awesome sound you can achieve from a bluray disc player.

HDMI cables are great for connecting the various components of the system. Connect Bluray disc player to receiver via HDMI and then connect the receiver to the television via another HDMI cable.

However a problem arises with the Sky plus HD receiver.. The sky plus satellite receiver still uses HDMI 1.1, which does not carry 5.1 surround sound. Therefore the connections required to get 5.1 surround sound on your home theatre system are:

  • Use HDMI to connect the Sky Satellite receiver to the Television
  • Use an optical cable to connect the Sky Satellite receiver to the Multi Channel AV receiver.

While the above was necessary with the Sony str-dh800 receiver, you have the option to connect with the Yamaha receiver as follows:

  • Use HDMI to connect Sky Satellite receiver to the Yamaha Receiver on HDMI4 port
  • Use optical cable to connect Sky receiver to the Yamaha Receiver on AV4 port
  • Use the option on the Yamaha receiver to associate AV4 input with HDMI4 for video.

The Yamaha receiver also has an iPod dock feature, and by purchasing the optional Yamaha YDS-11SL Universal iPod Dock you can just sit your iPod in the docking station.

The docking unit easily connects to a dedicated socket on the receiver using the supplied cable for both power and audio/video. The iPod can then be controlled by the Yamaha remote, or as in my case the Harmony One Universal remote. I can now select what I want to see or hear and start and stop both music and videos from the sofa using the remote. I can see the selection I am making on the TV screen. The videos are being up-scaled and the picture is much clearer than it was when going through the component video option direct to the television.

  • Yamaha YDS-11SL Universal iPod Dock to AV Receiver.
  • Use HDMI to connect Receiver to TV.

Various Cables and connectors

Note that the Harman Kardon HKTS7 5.1 Home Theatre System Speaker Package does come with the following speaker cables:

  • 2 x 12mtr for connecting the rear surround speakers.
  • 3 x 6mtr for connecting the two front speakers and the centre speaker.
  • 1 RCA cable for connecting to the sub-woofer.

These are the additional cables used:

Banana plugs are not suitable for the Yamaha receiver. This is unfortunate. The Yamaha Owner’s manual shows a diagram on how to connect the banana plugs but states in brackets (Except Korea, UK, Europe, Russia and Asia Models).

The digital audio coaxial cable is no longer required.
